Adsorbent for Nutrient Management

Water purification

The presence of high levels of phosphorous in bodies of water is one of the most pressing environmental threats to water supply. This project out of Georgia Tech is developing a novel adsorbent material, which uses magnetic nanoparticles to capture and remove excess phosphorous in personal water filtration products, fish tanks and industrial wastewater.

Existing methods for removing phosphorous from water are costly and energy intensive. The newly developed adsorbent method drastically reduces costs and can be performed in only minutes, with adsorbent capability more than 100 times greater than leading products.

Researchers are readying the new adsorbent for widespread use, with possible applications ranging from aquacultural farming to heavy industry to household products.
