Liquid biopsy for cancer cells

Counting and capturing cancer cells is a crucial part of treatment and research, but existing technologies are expensive and relatively ineffective. Ferrohydrodynamic cell sorting (FSC) is a novel, inexpensive and highly effective means of enumerating circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and related exosomes; all it requires from the patient is a simple blood test.

Developed at UGA, the cell sort approach It is the first system of its kind to collect both CTCs and exosomes simultaneously.

The information acquired from FSC tests can inform not only an individual’s treatment, but also future medical research.

With an estimated market size of over $500 million globally, increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 7%, the FSC technology is increasingly relevant to cancer research and treatment.
