Trip Smisson, M.D.

Neurosurgeon and Partner

Dr. Hugh F. Smisson III is a neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive treatment of the spine. He has developed techniques and created devices that are currently used throughout the United States and Europe.

Dr. Smisson holds over 50 U.S. and international patents for a variety of medical devices. He has founded multiple companies over the last 20 years, including several biomedical companies that produce spinal implants as well as infusion pumps used worldwide.

In 2017, Dr. Smisson co-found Smisson-Mathis Energy, which specializes in biodiesel fuel made from waste oils. He currently serves as chairman of the board for the company.

Dr. Smisson has served as an associate professor of neurosurgery at Mercer University as well as a clinical professor of neurosurgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He is past president of the Georgia Neurological Society.

Dr. Smisson received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1986. He interned in general surgery and finished his neurosurgery training at MCG in 1992. He has been a partner at The Georgia Neurosurgical Institute for the last 30 years. He is board certified in neurological surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and is a pilot and an avid sailor.
